Armed Forces Covenant

On 23 June 2011, the Vale of Glamorgan launched a Community Covenant - the first of its kind in Wales.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they serve with their lives.

Its two principles are that, recognising the unique obligations of, and sacrifices made by, the Armed Forces:

  • Those who serve in the Armed Forces, whether Regular or Reserve, those who have served in the past, and their families, should face no disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services

  • Special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most such as the injured and the bereaved

If you are a member of the armed forces, a veteran, family member or widow(er), the Vale of Glamorgan Council is committed to providing easy access to the support you are entitled to.

The armed forces community refers to all those who are serving or have served in the Army, Navy, Royal Air Force and Merchant Navy (during conflict). The community also includes immediate family members and dependents of those who have served.

There are a wide range of services specifically designed for the armed forces community available from local government, Ministry of Defence and third sector organisations. It can often be confusing when trying to find the best organisations to help.

Whenever you request a service, please make us aware that you are a member of the armed forces community. There are often special rules that apply to members of the community in relation to local government services, and we want to ensure that you benefit from these.
