July 2014 - Scheme Progress

Detailed design of the Coldbrook Flood Risk Management Scheme is nearing completion whilst steps are being taken to select Contractors to price the proposed works. Pre-qualification questionnaires for the works, which were advertised on the ‘Buy 4 Wales’ website, were returned on Friday 18th July. Tenders will be invited from selected contractors in the near future. Details of the proposed works will be available to view at community events planned for September 2014 (dates and locations to be confirmed).

Dyfan Road Open Space - Vegetation Clearance - Vegetation clearance works are required in the Dyfan Rd Public Open Space to facilitate the construction of a flood storage area later in the year. The storage lagoon will only fill during extreme rainfall events, holding water back and preventing flooding lower in the catchment. The footprint of the storage area has increased since the original scheme design as a result of the increase in predicted design flows. The vegetation, including trees bounding the streams must be removed to avoid delays to the planned construction works. If breeding birds nest within these areas the site works will be delayed until the nests are abandoned in the Autumn. Wild birds are protected by law from being killed, injured or captured, while their nests and eggs are protected from being damaged, destroyed or taken.

The revised scheme design has been completed and the appropriate consents, licences and approvals are now being sought to proceed with the scheme.

January 2013 - Scheme modelling and redesign

A scheme redesign is underway following a review of the catchment flow models used to design the scheme. The scheme is designed to a 1 in 100yr standard of service plus a climate change allowance. An increase in the flows down through the catchment predicted for this extreme event will require upsizing of elements of the scheme and rechecking of the impacts downstream of the catchment.
