Work underway to revamp Murchfield Courts
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is making a series of upgrades to the former Murchfield Courts in Dinas Powys.
This latest redevelopment follows a period of public consultation on possible improvements to the site in Summer 2023.
The area will now feature a multifunctional recreation and community space with a dual basketball and netball court which can also be used for other activities such as yoga, dance and community events.
Around the court, there are varied bench seating options that can be used as fitness equipment and new soft landscaping to increase biodiversity.
Cllr Mark Wilson, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “These are much-needed improvements to the Murchfield Courts following consultation with the community in Dinas Powys.
“This redevelopment will provide residents of all ages with an even better place to relax, socialise, exercise and enjoy being outdoors.
“I look forward to seeing the new facilities when completed - which will undoubtedly be a brilliant multipurpose resource for the community.”
Art consultants Aberrant Architecture have been appointed to design the public art elements of the site, including the new designs on the surface of the courts, bespoke seating, and perimeter fencing.
The public art and open space elements of the scheme are funded predominantly by Section 106 contributions, secured by the Council from new development in the area. The scheme has also benefited from Sports Wales and Shared Prosperity funding.
Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Cabinet Member for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language said: “The redevelopment works at Murchfield Courts will provide residents with a new interactive space for all to use and enjoy.
“Combining Public Art and Public Open Space Section 106 developer’s funding has enabled contractors to create a multifunctional and accessible community resource."
The Murchfield Court project forms the second phase of planned works for this area along with the nearby playground which was upgraded in 2021.
The redevelopment of Murchfield Court is expected to be completed by the end of March.
