Some of the actions being taken as part of the campaign include:

  • Raising awareness of the condition locally
  • Providing access to information for people living with dementia and their loved ones
  • Liaising with local businesses to enact the ‘Dementia Listens’ campaign and providing them with materials to show support for the initiative
  • Helping to provide safe social inclusive activities and appropriate transport
  • Providing and facilitating dementia awareness training sessions

There are now 45 businesses in Llantwit Major who have pledged to become ‘dementia friendly’ and the local Rotary Club has donated £1000 to fund materials such as entrance mats and leaflets for people experiencing dementia and their carers.

Cllr Eddie Williams, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health said: “Becoming a dementia friendly town can make a big difference in supporting people affected by dementia to live a better and more fulfilled life.

“Raising awareness of the condition locally will help people to continue to participate fully in their own communities and stay connected.

“The Council is committed to supporting the campaign to achieve dementia friendly status in Llantwit Major, and will continue to champion the needs of all residents.”

The town will also be hosting its first Dementia Open Day on 12 April between 10am and 2pm at Llantonian Hall, where many organisations and services will be present to give information and advice.

There are many activities that are already held regularly in the town that those with dementia may wish to attend, including the Chatty Caffi at CF61 and the Memory Café at Our Lady and St Illtyds Catholic Church Hall.
