fly-tippingA Bridgend resident has been fined £300 for fly-tipping following an investigation by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Waste Crime Unit (WCU).

Officers were alerted to an incident on common land at Ogmore-by-Sea where it appeared a large amount of building waste had been dumped.

Set up in March last year, the WCU is made up of ex-Police and HM Prison officers and specialises in fly-tipping and waste prosecutions.

Members of the team identified the person attached to the waste and they have been issued with a £300 Fixed Penalty Notice.

Enquiries to establish the identity of a suspected rogue waste carrier responsible for transporting the material to the location are ongoing.

Cllr Mark Wilson, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “I hope this case sends out a message that fly-tipping will not be tolerated in the Vale. We will come after those committing this offence and prosecute them to the full extent of the law.

“Our Environmental Enforcement Officers regularly patrol known fly-tipping hotspots and respond to any reports relating to this matter.

“Each incident is treated as a separate crime scene and a full-scale criminal investigation takes place. Officers gather evidence, interview suspects and, in certain cases, work closely with partners in Community Safety and South Wales Police.

“This is an issue we take extremely seriously so I would urge any potential perpetrators to think twice before dumping their waste in the Vale.

“Fly-tipping is a crime. Anyone found to be committing this type of offence could face serious consequences, which include being issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, prosecution, fines of up to £50,000 or even imprisonment.”

Since November 2022, the Council has dealt with more than 100 incidents of suspected fly-tipping in the Vale and launched Operation Griffin as a result.

This is a strategy whereby known fly-tipping hotspots are targeted and a zero-tolerance approach to waste crime is adopted.
