Additional funding secured to enhance the final design for the Knap Skatepark
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been working in partnership with the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund and Sport Wales to deliver a new bespoke, freeform concrete skatepark to replace the Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark at the Cold Knap in Barry.
£350,000 of funding was secured last March through a grant from Sport Wales, who’ve provided £200,000 for the project, capital funding from the Council and an additional £30,000 coming from the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund.
However, the enhanced design that was produced through extensive consultation with the local skate community and Bendcrete Leisure Ltd. required an additional £80,900, which has now been secured through The National Lottery Community Fund.
Now that the final design has been agreed, Bendcrete are anticipated to begin construction on site late in April and the design will take around 14 weeks to build.
Cllr Gwyn John, Cabinet Member for Sport, Leisure and Well-being, said: “Whilst we haven’t been able to incorporate all the requests made during the consultation, the new design will cater for everybody, and offers challenging transfer lines for the more advance riders.
“I’m really pleased that the Council, in partnership with the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund and Sport Wales, will deliver a top quality facility for the skate community in a well-established and popular location.”
Gaynor Taylor added: “I am thrilled that the Lottery has provided the extra funding needed for the new Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark to proceed. I am really looking forward to Bendcrete coming on site.
“I’d like to thank Sport Wales, the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the National Lottery Community Fund, the Waterloo Foundation, the South Wales Police Youth Trust and the generosity of everyone who have made donations to make this project possible.”
