Lower Gladstone Garden MuralThrough an open selection process, artist Grant Radford was selected to design and paint both murals. He was tasked with creating designs that would reflect the different characters and uses of the two gardens.

Grant spent a day with pupils of Gladstone Primary School, facilitating a workshop on drawing floral forms.

He also met with residents at Golau Caredig over coffee to hear their memories about Gladstone Gardens. The Lower Garden used to be known as the ‘blind park’ and had Braille signs with the names of the plants.

The upper garden has recently had new sports and play facilities installed and the adjacent mural reflects these.

Grant and his team of helpers, including a volunteer from the Memo Art Centre’s volunteer bank, completed the murals at the end of May this year.

Cllr Rhiannon Birch said: “This is a wonderful addition to the beautiful gardens at Gladstone.

“We hope that the murals will bring the local communities together to enjoy and appreciate the art.

“Section 106 funding enables the council to deliver these projects and make vast improvements to the appearance in the Vale.”
