Gladstone Garden Green FlagJudging body and environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy awarded the Council-maintained spaces with Green Flag status after assessing the sites on their cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement, among other criteria.

Cosmeston and Porthkerry country parks both received the accolade, along with Romilly Park, Belle Vue Park, Central Park, The Knap Gardens, Victoria Park, Gladstone Park, Alexandra Park, and Barry Island Promenade Gardens.

Now in its third decade, the Green Flag Award recognises well-managed parks and green spaces in 20 countries around the world. Parks must apply each year to keep their award, and winning sites are given a flag to fly for twelve months.

Councillor Mark Wilson, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “Our much-loved parks and gardens attract residents and visitors all year round, and so I’m delighted to see so many recognised with a Green Flag award once again.

“Green sites play a vital role in supporting mental and physical wellbeing, and community cohesion, whilst providing ever-increasingly important space for plants and wildlife to flourish.

“The standard required to achieve Green Flag status is extremely high and this fantastic achievement is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our parks staff, volunteers, and community groups.”
