The Council’s Leader, Cllr Lis Burnett, and Chief Executive, Rob Thomas, recently challenged the Consortium for their lack of progress in delivering community and other important facilities at their large-scale development in Barry.

The Waterfront Consortium, consisting of national housebuilders Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Barratt Homes, was granted planning permission for this project back in March 2012.

However, while new properties continue to be built and sold at pace, very little progress has been made on other important elements of the scheme.

Green spaces, parks and footpaths are still to be finished, whilst roads remain in a partially-completed state.

The Council has previously had to take action against the Waterfront Consortium to ensure a complex of shops, bars and restaurants known as the District Centre was built, while the new St Baruc school building was completed only after the Council threatened legal action.

The Consortium continues to provide excuses for the lack of progress on delivering long-awaited community facilities.

Barry Waterfront Community Meeting (1)The purpose of the community meeting, which will take place on Monday 18 September between 4:30-6pm at Academy Espresso Bar, is to learn from Barry Waterfront residents about their experiences of living on this development and their dealings with the Consortium.

The Council wishes to work with the community to increase pressure on the developers to deliver all of the elements in their agreement and within their control.

The public meeting will be open to all and is an opportunity for residents to learn about the latest action the Council has taken in addition to sharing their experiences with senior officers.

Cllr Lis Burnett, Leader of the Council, said: “I’m committed to engaging with residents to learn about their experiences. As a Council we strive to build strong communities and the Consortium is failing to build anything but houses and flats that it can profit from.

“As a Council, we will do everything in our power to hold developers to account and make sure they honour their commitments.

“I look forward to meeting the Barry Waterfront Community and taking action together.”
