Active travel routes aim to promote cycling and walking as alternatives to less environmentally friendly modes of transport.

In the first consultation, we asked for opinions on several potential walking and cycle routes to link the two areas.  The most popular route, along the old railway line (as chosen by the public) has been taken forward to the next stage of design.

The second consultation an opportunity for the public to tell the Council what they think about the proposals they have designed.

The aim of this scheme is to provide a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists and provide better opportunities for active travel, particularly for vulnerable road users and school pupils.

Due to the narrow width of the existing shared path, the current route does not conform to Active Travel standards.

The Council aims to make a route that is safer and accessible, by widening existing routes and clearing any protruding overgrowth, along with other improvements.

To improve safety further and comply with Active Travel guidelines, it is proposed to reduce the speed limit on the road to 30mph.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Deputy Leader, and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places said: “The improvement of walking and cycling provision in this area would provide users travelling in this way with a safer route between these locations.

“We hope this project will encourage residents to use the path as an alternative to motorised forms of transport, which in turn benefits the environment.

“This aligns with our Project Zero pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030. We also want to encourage others to make positive changes and the creation of Active Travel Routes should help achieve that.”

The consultation runs 12 April to 3 May and will include a drop-in session on Thursday 25 April at The Old School, Sully.
