Vale of Glamorgan
Using Welsh Government funding, the Council is looking to enhance and improve active travel routes around the Vale with murals, play features and activity trails.
Cogan Bridge and Gladstone Bridge are gateways to existing active travel routes at Penarth Marina and Barry Waterfront. The bridges have recently been subject to graffitiing and so were identified as landmarks for improvement.
During the initial stages of the project, the designer held a workshop to collaborate with local residents to develop a colourful, inviting design that resonates with the community.
The final designs explore what Barry and Cogan mean to the community and the chosen shapes and colours were inspired by local landmarks and the town’s history.
Peter King, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport said: “It’s great to see a collaborative project that will not only visually improve the local area but will also provide a story of local history. “The scheme will transform the bridges into vibrant, inviting landmarks, hopefully encouraging residents to make use of the walkways and access active travel routes. “Encouraging active travel is crucial in achieving our Project Zero goals, the Council’s commitment to tackle climate change.”
