Inflation is climbing, while energy, fuel and food prices have increased to record highs in recent months. This means households are spending significantly more than they were previously, with some older people on limited budgets hit hardest.

To help address this, the Council and Forum are promoting the fact that those over 50 may be eligible for a range of discounts and financial privileges. Many people are unaware of this fact, so such entitlements often go unclaimed. Examples of the entitlements on offer include:

•         Pension credits and boosts - a benefit for people over State Pension age that tops up income.

•         Council Tax reduction - this may be a total or partial discount depending on circumstances.

•         Housing benefit – support to help pay rent.

•         Attendance allowance – available for older people who may need extra help to stay independent at home.

•         Carers allowance – a benefit for those who are involved in caring for someone else.

•         Heating Benefits – a winter fuel payment to help pay bills.

50plus2Cllr Ben Gray, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health, said: “The last few months have been difficult for a range of people as the cost of everyday life shoots up.

“Older people may be among those impacted most by this situation so we want to draw people’s attention to a number of financial entitlements available to this group, depending on their circumstances.

“We offer a Council Tax reduction in certain instances, while it may also be possible to boost your pension or receive an extra allowance if a carer. Many other services are also available for free or at a discounted rate to those over 50.

“It’s important we make people aware of exactly what they’re entitled to so no-one misses out.”

Lynda Wallis, Executive Chair of the Vale 50+ Strategy Forum, said: “There are millions of pounds that is unclaimed by older people because they are not aware that they are entitled to claim it.

“With the rising cost of living it is really important that older people are made aware of the extra money that is available to them.”
