Penarth library to launch new makerspace project

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is putting the final touches to a new facility at Penarth Library, ready for launch in the coming weeks.

The Makerspace facility will provide a location for library users to gather, share resources and work on projects.

Funding from the Council will see a brand-new range of equipment that can be used for digital design and fabrication. 

Penarth Library will also be hosting sessions in 3D printing, laser cutting, sublimation printing and vistal and sound design.

These will be open to individuals, community groups and local businesses.

The Makerspace will include equipment such as, Apple Mac computers, 3D printers and digital designed software for photos, videos and music.

Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration said:

“Penarth Library Makerspace will help us meet the changing needs of our communities by offering access to new technologies and promoting the importance and use of digital literacies across all age ranges.

“Vale of Glamorgan Libraries provide access to information and encourage the development of literacy, creativity, and wellbeing and this project will increase the community’s access to resources, helping them to learn and develop digital and creative skills.

“The works at Penarth Library are provided with the help of Section 106 funding which comes to the Council for local community use as a levy on building developments in Penarth. The Makerspace project is part of a UK Government initiative to help intermediate and advanced learners to develop their skills and creativity.”
