Council wins award at Ystadau Conference
The Vale of Glamorgan Council recently celebrated after winning an award at the Ystadau Cymru Conference.
The awards ceremony, held virtually, took place on Thursday 1 December.
The award for ‘Delivering Social Value’ was won by the Council, in partnership with Ogmore by Sea Village Association for making a significant impact on the community it serves.
In giving the award, Ystadau Cymru recognised the work carried out by the Council in helping to provide a multi-purpose village hall in Ogmore by Sea.
The village hall is situated on the site of a once-disused public toilet and was funded through section 106 funding.
Section 106 monies are financial contributions given to the Council by companies constructing nearby developments for use on community projects.
The village hall can be used for indoor sports, keep-fit classes, weddings, concerts and more. It also hosts a creche for up to 25 children.
Councillor Bronwen Brooks, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places said: “I’m very pleased that this project is being celebrated. It is an excellent example of cooperation between the Council and the community and a great example of good practice for community asset transfer.
“Hopefully this building will go on to be a thriving asset for the local community.”
A representative of the Village Hall Association said: “Members of our Community have voluntarily worked for many years to deliver this superb facility. The hall is used by a wide demographic from the community virtually every day of the week and we are now hosting weddings. It is a delight to see people now using what is a fantastic community facility with amazing views across the Bristol channel.
“We are delighted that the Council has been recognised by Ystadau Cymru for the best Social Value project of the year, as the Council’s Estates team together with other officers and members of the Council, together with the Welsh Government have provided significant support over the years to the Village Hall Association to enable this project to proceed.”
South Point Primary School was also shortlisted for an award in the ‘Demonstrating Environmental Sustainability’ category.
