Penarth Library to undergo extensive refurbishment project
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has commissioned two upgrades to the library, set to be completed in the coming months.
Brand new computing facilities will replace the current IT suite. The space will also house a makerspace, a location where library users can gather to co-create, share resources, work on projects and network.
The makerspace project is part of a UK Government initiative to help intermediate and advanced learners to develop their skills and creativity. Those pursuing a STEM, or STEAM subjects are set to benefit from the space.
The Council has also been awarded funding from the Welsh Government’s Museums, Archives and Library Division to refurbish the ground floor. The outdated space will be modernised and made more accessible.
Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Culture, Cllr Kathryn McCaffer said: “We are delighted to have been awarded funding for the upgrade of Penarth library.
“Both projects aim to increase the community’s access to library resources including book stock, study and meeting areas and computer and internet access.
“As the Council’s Young People’s Champion, I am also pleased to see the installation of the makerspace. I hope young people will be inspired to make the most of it to develop their talents and passions.”
Due to the extent of the works being undertaken, the library building will be closed to the public during this period.
The library will be operating a Click & Collect service out of the Pop-Up Library at the Sea Cadets Hall from September 14 until early 2021.
During this time, users can reserve books, audio books and DVDs using the library’s online catalogue to be collected on an agreed date and time. Items can also be reserved via telephone or email.
