Learn Welsh

Thank you

May 20 - Day 31

One of the most important phrases in the Welsh language!

We'd like to say 'diolch yn fawr' to all who took part in the iso-language lessons, and hope you've enjoyed learning.

Happy Birthday

May 19 - Day 30

When is your birthday?

Will you or someone you know be celebrating a birthday during lockdown? Fear not, we've got birthday card / text / email / call content covered.

Whats your favourite

May 18 - Day 29

What's your favourite...

Practise asking this throughout the day, find out your family and friends' favourite film (ffilm), food (bwyd), drink (diod)! The list is endless.

Summer

May 17 - Day 28

We've passed the half way mark, summer is officially on the horizon!

The 'a' in 'haf' is elongated, like in 'arm'.

Lockdown

May 16 - Day 27

How could we forget this one! The word on everyone's lips. The 'aw' sound in Welsh is similar to the 'ou' in 'ouch'.

What's the first thing you'll be doing post-lockdown?

Family

May 15 - Day 26

It's International Day of Families.

Whether you've been together at home or keeping in contact via phone or video call, we're sure that we're all grateful for family at this time.

Shall we sit in the garden_

May 14 - Day 25

We've made it past the middle of the week, and the weekend is in sight.

What have you got planned for the weekend? We think we'll be taking to the garden once again.

Good afternoon

May 13 - Day 24

It's day 24, and we'd like to thank everyone who's been taking part in the iso-language lessons.

We're running a little late today, a nice easy one to kick off the afternoon.

Windy

May 12 - Day 23

We've had a fair bit of it in recent days...

The 'wyn' in 'gwyntog' is pronounced like the English 'win'.

Key Workers

May 11 - Day 22

As always, we'd like to extend our thanks to the #RainbowHeroes who were working hard, keeping the country running over the Bank Holiday.

Diolch Gweithwyr Allweddol!

Bank Holiday

May 10 - Day 21

As another gorgeous weekend draws to a close, we'd like to thank you all for staying home this Bank Holiday and saving lives.

Don't forget, the 'wy' sound in Welsh is similar to 'oy' in 'boy'.

The Queen

May 9 - Day 20

We hope you all had a brilliant day celebrating the 75th VE Day!

Did you catch the Queen's Speech?

VE Day

May 8 - Day 19

Whether you're baking scones, hosting your own garden party, sipping bubbly or tuning into the Queen's speech, you can add your Welsh lessons to your VE Day celebration.

Cake ingredients

May 7 - Day 18

We've all been doing it.

Supermarket shelves are empty of blawd, wyau and siwgr as we all take to the kitchen and churn out focaccias, banana bread and cheesecakes by the dozen. Once (if) you've got your ingredients, you're good to go!

Keeping in contact

May 6 - Day 17

What's your favourite way of staying in touch? Now you can tell us in Welsh.

Don't forget to reach out to people who may be lonely or vulnerable whilst at home.

Teachers

May 5 - Day 16

It's #NationalTeacherDay

Our teachers have gone above and beyond during the crisis, finding news ways to deliver the curriculum and looking after children of our key workers and vulnerable children. As always, diolch yn fawr.

Sun and sunny

May 4 - Day 15

After a rather grey weekend, we're pleased to see that the sun has decided to make a re-appearance!

So today, you'll have plenty of opportunities to practise...

Garden tools

May 3 - Day 14

It's day 13 of the iso-language lessons! Tackling the garden this weekend? Then you'll need these!

The 'aw' sound in Welsh is pronounced like the 'ou' in 'ouch', not the 'aw' in 'awesome'.

Stay Home Save Lives

May 2 - Day 13

It's the weekend!

Whether you've had a week of home schooling, working from home or pursuing your new lockdown hobbies, please remember this important message!

Tea, coffee, sugar

May 1 - Day 12

Elevenses anyone?

Last Friday we practised 'hoffet ti baned', so this week we thought we'd add to it!

What's your mid-morning fix?

How are you feeling_

April 30 - Day 11

How are you feeling? Have you checked in on your friends, family and neighbours today?

A text, phone-call or video-call could make their day.

What time is lunch_

April 29 - Day 10

It's that time of the day! Breakfast is a distant memory, and sadly, lunchtime still feels like an age away.

A very important question for you to practise.

I enjoy running

April 28 - Day 9

Who's been taking part in the the 5k4theNHS?

Whether you're a Speedy Gonzalez or the slow and steady type, running 5k is a brilliant way to keep active, enjoy the outdoors and support our NHS.

Monday

April 27 - Day 8

Today is 'Dydd Llun' - or you might know it as Monday - and we're ready for the new week ahead.

'Dd' can be difficult to grasp, although it sounds much like the 'th' in 'although.'

Top 3 isolation activities

April 26 - Day 7

Have you even been isolating if you haven't done at least one of these activities?

Mary Berry, you've got competition.

Weekend

April 25 - Day 6

It's the penwythnos (or weekend, as you may know it) and the sun is shining!

The 'wy' sound in Welsh can be likened to the English 'oi'.

Would you like a cuppa_

April 24 - Day 5

Who's chief hot beverage maker in your house?!

Take it in turns today so you can practise asking...

Exercise

April 23 - Day 4

Whether you’re walking, running, cycling, or tuning into P.E. with Joe Wicks, we hope you're getting your daily exercise!

Don't forget, a 'ff' in Welsh sounds like a single 'f' in English, whereas a single 'f' sounds like an English 'v'.

Working from home

April 22 - Day 3

Kitchen tables are the new offices, jogging bottoms constitute acceptable work attire, meetings are held from the sofa and £3 Meal Deals are a thing of the past.

Love it or hate it, we're all at it!

Positive words

April 21 - Day 2

It's day 2! We're doing our best to stay positive during these times, and thought we could spread some positivity through the medium of Welsh.

Bonus points if you can pronounce 'ardderchog' first time.

Good morning

April 20 - Day 1

Bore da! Today we'll be launching our daily iso-language lessons - a little fun to keep the cogs turning during lockdown.

Each day, we'll challenge you to try your hand at some Welsh words and phrases. We'll start with an easy one!
