Plans involve increasing the number of compulsory school age places from 126 to 210, whilst also lowering the age of St Nicholas’ youngest pupils from four to three-years-old to provide an additional 48 part-time nursery places.
The new building, which is planned to open in September 2021, will ensure all pupils can be taught in one location whereas at present reception classes need to be chaperoned to the ‘old school’ site approximately 85 metres away.
It also means greater demand for primary school places created by nearby housing developments can be met.
The new school will contain a range of modern facilities, including break out spaces for staff and pupils, improved outdoor sports facilities for both pupil and community use and better disabled access.
Cllr Lis Burnett, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration, said: “The expansion of St Nicholas Primary will not only allow the school to better accommodate the anticipated increase in demand, but also provide those pupils with better, more modern facilities that will improve their learning experience. “This is the latest project in our 21st Century Schools programme, a far-reaching body of work intended to transform educational facilities across the Vale.”
