Biography
Cllr Gwyn John was elected to represent Llantwit Major ward, which includes Llanmaes, St. Donats, Marcross, Monknash, West Camp St. Athan and Picketston.
Cllr Gwyn John was educated at Cowbridge Grammar School (1956 - 63). He worked for the Ministry of Defence for 25 years before moving into the engineering and supplies industries. He spent much of his spare time working in the leisure industry. Cllr John was a member of Llantwit Major Town Council from 1974-79 before returning to politics in 1999.
He was elected to the Vale of Glamorgan Council in 1999 as a Conservative candidate for the Llantwit Major ward. He resigned from the Conservative Party on 1 May 2004 and became an Independent Councillor.
Gwyn stood as an Independent in the 2004 election and topped the poll for the second time in his home town of Llantwit Major.
Born in 1945, he has always lived at Llantwit Major and is the seventh generation of his family in the Town, his great-grandfather was a Councillor and he has ‘ Llantwit Major running through his blood’ having played a huge part in the community throughout his life.
Gwyn was first elected to Llantwit Major Town Council in 1974 but five years later he did not seek re-election as his work took precedence.
He worked at RAF St. Athan for 25 years and in 1989 he was awarded the Imperial Service Medal for duty, he now works in the Engineering Supplies industry and combines this with his Council work.
Gwyn puts people before politics and works throughout the ward to help his constituents with all their problems, with regular home visits, offering advice, and taking on many personal issues for people needing help.
During his office he strongly supported the re-opening of the Vale of Glamorgan Railway, the building of the Childrens Integrated centre at Llantwit Major and modifying the Llantwit Major one-way system to make it the success it is today.
Two issues which concern Gwyn deeply are the number of homeless people in his community, and the future of young couples with children, looking for a home and a start in life.
Gwyn, who returned to Llantwit Major Town Council in 2004, is Leader of the Llantwit First Independent Group and strives to see the day when the power in the local authority is in the hands of Independents, who will put people first.
He is a football fanatic who has been a Football Club Secretary for 40 years and is a season ticket holder for Swansea City. He is married to Gloria, who has been his inspiration since his return to politics, and shares his interest in football.
