Domestic Abuse

1 in 4 women in England and Wales will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. Domestic abuse can occur regardless of gender, sexuality, class, age, race, religion or lifestyle.

 

The UK Government defines violence and abuse as

“any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality.”

Domestic abuse is usually about a person’s desire to control their partner, but abuse also can be carried out by family members or someone with whom there is or has been a close relationship.

 

The forms that domestic abuse can include, but are not limited to:

  • Psychological
  • Physical
  • Sexual
  • Financial
  • Emotional

Report Domestic Abuse

If you believe you or someone else is in immediate danger, do something straight away and contact 999 to tell the operator what is happening.

 

If you are being abused or think someone else is, you must tell someone. If you do not feel comfortable talking to social services, tell someone you trust and ask them to pass on the information. You could talk to a friend or relative, a doctor or a nurse, or anyone else in authority.

Housing Assistance

We can discuss your housing options with you. We can help you find somewhere safe to stay as well as helping you plan for the long term. Contact us and we will assess your situation and do the best to meet your needs. The support we provide may include:

  • Securing the property and advice on personal safety
  • Risk assessment and safety planning
  • Help with a tenancy problem, e.g. rent arrears, neighbour complaints
  • Support while you settle into your home
  • Someone to come with you to appointments, e.g. solicitors, police, doctors
  • Support with criminal justice issues, housing options, health and social care referrals
  • Support with debt and money issues
  • Support to access counselling services and workshops to build confidence and self-esteem
  • Liaising with and referring to other appropriate agencies.

It's In Our Hands - Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Strategy (VAWDASV) 2018-23

Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan regional partners have produced a stratgy with the vision:
 

'People who live, work, study in and visit Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan have the opportunity to live positive, independent lives without being affected by violence and abuse.'

 

The progress report on the action plan for 2019/20 outlines the second year of the implementation of the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Violence against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Strategy (VAWDASV) 2018-2023.

 

The action plan was developed by all partners involved in the development of the Strategy and the same partnership approach is taken to ensuring the action plan activities are delivered.
