The completion of several new school buildings in the Vale of Glamorgan marks a significant milestone in our commitment to providing modern and innovative educational facilities for our students. These state-of-the-art structures represent the culmination of extensive planning, design, and construction efforts aimed at creating dynamic learning environments that inspire creativity, foster academic excellence, and support the evolving needs of our students and educators.

 

The buildings are a testament to our dedication to enhancing the educational experience for all learners in the Vale of Glamorgan. Each facility has been meticulously designed to facilitate 21st-century teaching and learning, equipped with the latest technology, flexible learning spaces, and sustainable features that promote environmental stewardship in line with our Project Zero pledge.

Sustainable Ysgol St Baruc

Ysgol St Baruc Primary School

A Welsh Medium two form entry primary school with the capacity of 420 pupils plus a 48 full time equivalent nursery within the Waterfront Area of Barry. The development provides a two-storey modern building with great outdoor facilities such as a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), grass sporting pitches and informal play spaces. The development also included low carbon solutions with the inclusion of Air Source Heat Pumps, PV Panels and on-site Battery storage, EV charging points and cycle stands, to encourage active travel.

St David’s CiW Primary School

A new two-storey primary school was developed on the existing school site in Colwinston. The development allowed for the increase in pupil capacity at the school to 210 primary pupils plus a 24 fulltime equivalent nursery. The development provides a fit for purpose, 21st century learning environment for pupils attending the school. The development is sympathetic to its rural setting, whilst providing pupils with a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), large hall and outdoor learning spaces. There is also the inclusion of a habitat area and wildflower planting to increase the biodiversity on the site.

South Point Primary School

South Point Primary School is the first Net Zero Carbon (in operation) school within Wales. The provision was relocated from the rural area of Llancarfan. The new development allowed the increase of capacity at the school from 126 to 210 primary pupils plus providing a 24-place full time equivalent nursery provision. The new school provides improved outdoor sports facilities for both pupil and community use. There are grass pitches, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and informal play spaces, plus habitat areas along the boundary and within the SUDS features to increase biodiversity on the site. The internal spaces provide spacious teaching rooms, a central heart space for further teaching and learning and a large hall that can accommodate an array of sports and concerts. 

St Nicholas CiW Primary School

St Nicholas CiW Primary School

A new single storey school building has been constructed on the existing St Nicholas school site. The existing building was demolished to make way for a much-needed car park and drop off area. The capacity for the school is 126 primary pupils plus the inclusion of a new nursery provision for 16 full time equivalent pupils. The new building has provided the pupils with a fantastic building, where spaces have a designated use and pupils can access great outdoor playing areas. The works are currently in phase two of the development, which will provide grass sporting pitches, an improved habitat area and informal play spaces, along with onsite parking, EV charging points and cycle stands. 

Cowbridge Primary

The new development provides a capacity of 210 primary and 24 full time equivalent nursery places for the Cowbridge area, located on the existing Cowbridge Comprehensive School site, thus creating a through school for ages 3-19. The design of the school is innovative and respectful to the landscape within which it sits, providing both internal and external spaces for pupils to learn and grow. 

Derw Newydd

Formerly known as the Court Road Depot in Barry, this site has undergone a significant transformation, featuring a new building designed to accommodate 60 pupils aged 11-16. The development caters to the needs of students requiring a more specialised approach to teaching. Externally, the facility boasts a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), a dedicated habitat area, and external workshops that facilitate teaching and learning in areas such as Design and Technology, Mechanics, and Construction. These external features complement the impressive internal facilities, which include a food technology room, fitness centre, and a music recording studio, plus specialised rooms have been incorporated including a range of one-to-one rooms and breakout areas, collectively contributing to an enriching educational experience.

Whitmore High School

This new development consists of a three-storey secondary school building an existing comprehensive school site. This new secondary school caters for mixed sex pupils between the ages of 11 – 18. providing 1,100 pupil places, of which 200 are sixth form. Facilities include indoor sports facilities, large hall that is used for concerts and community gatherings, landscaped areas designed for learning, social and informal use, and an all-weather 3G football pitch plus Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) that can be booked to use by the community.

Ysgol Bro Morgannwg

Ysgol Bro Morgannwg High School

This project was a refurbishment and extension of the existing school. The expansion was required to increase the capacity to 1,660 pupils. The existing sports hall and teaching block were demolished which include a new single-storey staff/visitor entrance and administration building, a new sports hall and adjacent three-storey teaching block, an extension to the existing DT department and an extension to the existing dining area to create a new full equipped catering kitchen. The site also benefits from a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), a new 3G Rugby all-weather sports pitch, and a new coach drop-off / pick-up area.

Pencoedtre High School

The construction of Pencoedtre High School marked the third comprehensive school development in Barry. This modern, 4-story school accommodates 1,100 pupils plus sixth form and boasts state-of-the-art facilities. The impressive features include expansive science labs, art studios with a kiln room, music studios, an open-plan dining area, spacious teaching rooms, and wide corridors.

 

At the heart of the school on the ground floor is the main hall and dining space, seamlessly connected to facilitate various events such as concerts, with the fully equipped catering kitchen providing refreshments. External amenities comprise a dedicated car park for both staff and visitors equipped with EV charging points, grass pitches, a Multi-Use Games Area, and a 3G Hockey all-weather sports pitch.
