Home Library Service

Books delivered straight to your home. Some readers are unable to get to the library to choose their books and don’t have anyone to come to the library for them.

For those readers we have the Home Library Service, delivered by selected volunteers who bring a big bag of books or talking books chosen from the stock at their nearest Library.

Readers are generally visited once a month and can be issued with up to ten items which are stamped for four weeks. Books can also be reserved online.

This scheme is entirely free but is dependent on having sufficient volunteers to deliver the books to our readers. There may occasionally be a waiting list.

If you think this service is right for you a member of staff will visit you to discuss eligibility and have a chat about your reading interests and tastes. You will then be paired with a volunteer who has been DBS checked and issued with Vale of Glamorgan photo ID.

If you know someone else who may be eligible for this service or you have further questions, please contact Melanie Weeks:

Volunteer

Our Home Library Service can only exist with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers, based at their local libraries and delivering books to Home Borrowers in their area.

Any adult can apply to be a volunteer with Vale Libraries. You will need: a friendly personality, an interest in books and reading, experience of working with people and an understanding of the needs of older people and those with disabilities. You will also have a valid driving licence and access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance and MoT.

All volunteers are interviewed and asked to provide references. They are DBS checked and given photo ID and in return are paid expenses at the standard mileage rate.
