Cinema at Penarth Pavilion - 'THE HOLDOVERS'

Wednesday 5 June 2024, 2pm - 4pm

The Holdovers - with no family and nowhere to go over Christmas holiday in 1970, teacher Paul Hunham remains at school to supervise students unable to journey home. After a few days, only one student holdover remains - a troublemaking 18-year-old named Angus, a good student whose bad behaviour always threatens to get him expelled.

Joining Paul and Angus is head cook Mary who caters to sons of privilege and whose own son was recently lost in Vietnam. These three very different people form an unlikely Christmas family sharing comic misadventures during two snowy weeks in New England helping one another understand that they are not beholden to their past and can choose their own futures.

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Beethoven and Dvorak’s chamber works!

This event is part of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s residency at the pavilion, providing a performance platform for the next exciting generation of emerging creatives.

The Cassiopeia Ensemble was formed in January 2021 during their first year of specialist music performance study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. Now in their fourth and final year, and graduating in July, the ensemble is delighted to be touring the UK performing a variety of chamber works to celebrate their time making music together.

As part of their studies at the conservatoire, the group has received coaching from industry professionals, such as members of the internationally acclaimed Consone, Agate, and London Haydn string quartets, as well as Robin Green, concert pianist; Simon Phillipo, head of keyboard at RWCMD; and Lesley Hatfield, leader of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales; as well as multiple other members of the highly renowned string and piano staff at the RWCMD.

The Ensemble has had lots of fun bringing this programme together and are looking forward to performing at Penarth Pier Pavilion.

Cinema at Penarth Pavilion - 'ONE LIFE'

Wednesday 19 June 2024, 2pm - 4pm

The true story of Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis.

Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it's 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It's not until a live BBC television show, 'That's Life', surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children - now adults - that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.
