Work Welsh

This is the page for Welsh learners – current and prospective

The Vale of Glamorgan Council strongly encourages staff to learn Welsh – there are so many benefits for you, for the organisation, for our customers, and for our community.

Work Welsh is not just for learners but also for Welsh speakers who want to improve their language skills and gain confidence to use their Welsh more in the workplace.

We are proud to appoint a Work Welsh Co-ordinator, Sarian Thomas-Jones, to develop Welsh language skills among staff and deliver Welsh courses.

Courses are free of charge to staff and will take place in work time – you will not have to use your leave or own time to attend the courses. Please check with your manager before signing up.

Tools and Resources

Here are some useful tools to help you use Welsh in work as well as some other resources to help you learn and use your Welsh.

  • Welsh Language Software
Cysgliad is a software programme which provides Welsh spell checking and a Welsh dictionary, Cysgeir and Gwirio. Please contact ICT or request via Halo on your desktop. Please let us know if you would like this software installed on your PC.
  • Microsoft Office

    Microsoft 365

Did you know that you can switch your Microsoft 365 programs to display in Welsh?

    • In Outlook, go to Settings, Language and Time, untoggle ‘use my Microsoft 365 settings’, and select Cymraeg from the list. Then Save!

    • In Teams, go to Settings, Appearance and Accessibility, Language, and select Cymraeg from the list. You can also set translations to or from Welsh or English.

There are translation tools on most Microsoft Office programmes including Word and Outlook. On Word, go to the Language option on Review. On Outlook, select the three dots on an email. Welsh emails will also give you the option to translate at the top. These tools are great for checking your own Welsh work or for translating emails and documents received in Welsh.

Do not however use this tool to translate documents and official correspondence into Welsh – use the proper translation channels.
