Welsh Education

Whatever language you speak at home, Welsh-medium education can give your child additional opportunities, experiences, and skills.

There are many advantages to being bilingual. Research has shown that children who speak two languages can be more creative in their thinking.

For more information, look at the Your Bilingual Journey page on the Vale of Glamorgan website.

Welsh Language Centre

Welsh Language Centre LogoDid you know there are seven Welsh medium schools in the Vale of Glamorgan including six primary schools and one secondary school?

If your child is currently at English medium school and you are thinking of Welsh medium education, you could consider the Vale’s Welsh Language Centre based at Ysgol Gwaun y Nant in Barry.

The 12-week programme in our Welsh Language Centre allows primary age learners to be immersed in the Welsh language and gain a level of fluency that enables them to succeed in their Welsh-medium education journey at a Welsh-medium school in the Vale of Glamorgan.

  • Outcome 3: More children continue to improve their Welsh language skills when transferring from one stage of their statutory education to another.
  • Outcome 4: More learners study for assessed qualifications in Welsh (as a subject) and subjects through the medium of Welsh.
  • Outcome 5: More opportunities for learners to use Welsh in different contexts in school.
  • Outcome 6: An increase in the provision of Welsh-medium education for pupils with additional learning needs (ALN) in accordance with the duties imposed by the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018.
