Emotional wellbeing is your ability to understand the value of your emotions and use them to move your life forward in positive directions.
Emotional wellbeing is about being proactive and looking after yourself to ensure you are able to build resilience and look after your mental and physical health. Below are some of the ways in which we can develop our emotional wellbeing.
Spend quality time with others
- Helps you to develop links and widen networks with others
- Develop your self esteem
- Share your worries with someone who genuinely cares
- It will help you reinforce positive behaviours
- Spending time with friends and family reduce stress levels.
Learn things that interest you and keep you focused
- Learning gives you new ideas and something to focus on
- Allows you to meet more people and gives you ideas of new subjects to talk about
- It enables you to find something you might be passionate about in the future
- It gives you time for reflection and to develop your future self - You are a work in progress!
Exercise to help improve mood and reduce anxiety
- Taking up exercise will improve your mood almost immediately
- Your body will release endorphins that are natural mood lifters, as well as help you to de-stress
- Your cardiovascular system will benefit very quickly and your heart will become more efficient at getting blood and oxygen around your body
Physical Health
Develop a passion or take up a new hobby
- A new interest will help to reduce stress and change your focus
- Many hobbies will help you meet new people that have similar interests
- Learning something new will help your mind to develop and also give you space to yourself
Meditate or Practice Yoga to Relieve Stress

Manage Your Time
- Try to make a schedule and set goals for yourself for the week. You will start to feel more in control of your weekly activities and feel more able to focus.
- Ticking off things on your to do list will also give you a sense of achievement and feel les stressed.
- You will then naturally find time to do more things that will help you look after yourself, such as taking a bath, reading, hobbies etc.
Spend time outdoors
- Increased exposure to natural sunlight, incidents of seasonal affective disorder decrease.
- When individuals are exposed to natural sunlight, the vitamin D in their skin helps to elevate their moods.
- Spending less time in front of the television and computer and more time walking and doing other things that put the body in motion.
