Make a Pledge to #ChangeTheStory this White Ribbon Day
25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, also known as White Ribbon Day.
White Ribbon, the UK's leading charity engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls, are encouraging individuals and organisations to make consistent choices and actions so that we #ChangeTheStory for women and girls to live their lives free from the fear of violence.
This year, colleagues will be hosting a stall at the Civic offices between 10am - 3pm on Friday 24 November. Pop along to find out more about the White Ribbon campaign and to make your pledge to end violence against women and girls.
White Ribbon UK works to prevent men’s violence against women and girls, they aim to stop violence before it starts. They do this in many ways with their focus of enabling men and boys to be change makers.
They encourage men to, 'Never Use, excuse, or remain silent about men’s violence against women'.
The need for their work is seen in the lived experiences of women and girls across the UK.
The reality is that most violence against women is committed by men. Here are some statistics for reference.
- 30% of women have experienced workplace harassment, with 81% reporting that they hadbeen harassed by a man/men. (Government Equalities Office)
- 1.7 million women experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2022. (ONS)
Miles Punter, Director of Environment and Housing Services and an ambassador for the White Ribbon campaign, said: "This is an issue that I feel strongly about supporting, having done the 'walk a mile in her shoes' event in previous years which makes an important public statement for men not to perpetrate, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls.
"I have also leading on an ongoing piece of work in my directorate to provide female members of staff the opportunity to confidentially share their experiences of inequality or harassment in the workplace, in the hope that we can learn from any past mistakes and make our workplace a more inclusive place where women feel valued, safe and supported."
