National Apprenticeship Week Starts Today

6 February 2023

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is an annual week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

An apprenticeship is a scheme that allows an individual to work while simultaneously training towards a nationally recognised qualification in a relevant work area.

The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2023 is "Skills for Life"; reflecting on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career and help businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills.

The Council, as one of the largest employers in the Vale of Glamorgan, offers a variety of apprenticeship opportunities. These range from entry level apprenticeship roles, which are usually a fixed term employment opportunity that will lead to a recognised qualification, to upskilling existing employees at various stages of their career.

Throughout this week we will shine a light on the positive impact apprenticeships have had on individuals within the organisation but also for the wider organisation as an employer.

Gemma Williams, Operational Manager for Organisational Development, said, “Apprenticeships play a vital role for us as an employer. They help us to overcome recruitment barriers, particularly for young people aged between 16 – 24. But also, they provide excellent development opportunities for our existing workforce.

“I hope through reading the articles we share this week you will learn more about apprenticeships and consider whether it might be something that would benefit your team or service area.”
