Sean Granville is the ICT and Data Support Manager in Learning and Skills and is undertaking an BSc Applied Data Science degree alongside his role.

We caught up with Sean recently to find out how he’s getting on.

studying and working NAW“In general studying alongside work is fine, lots of evenings are spent reading books, research papers and course materials, where possible I try to keep my weekends free. There are pinch points two times a year around the time of assignment submission where the workload does increase significantly. It can be difficult to get the balance right between home, work and study during these weeks. It’s just a case of planning the work and trying to be as efficient as possible.

We also asked what his motivation was for gaining additional qualifications.

“First and foremost, I wanted to develop my skills and abilities with regard to working with and analysing both structured and unstructured data. I have a general interest in technology, the fact that machine learning and artificial intelligence features within the degree made it a fantastic opportunity not to be missed. I am really enjoying learning again, gaining lots of new skills that can benefit my current role, not only through the hard skills that are being taught but also in terms of approaching problems and problem solving.”

In case you missed yesterday’s article, here’s an overview of the opportunities that are currently available to all staff.
