It’s Global Intergenerational Week

GIW 2023

Global Intergenerational Week is an annual campaign that celebrates all things intergenerational.

The #GIW23 campaign aims to inspire communities and organisations, to embrace intergenerational practice, connecting people of different generations in mutually beneficial activities, a key objective in the Council’s work to make the Vale more age friendly.

Age Friendly Vale LogoWorking alongside the Vale of Glamorgan Public Services Board, the Council is committed to supporting people of all ages to live and age well across the county.

Recently, the Council used Welsh Government funding to appoint Siân Clemett-Davies, our new Age Friendly Vale Officer. Siân engages with partners from all across the Vale, including people of all ages, particularly those over 50, in the process of becoming a more age friendly community and supports various local intergenerational projects in her role.

During #GIW23, landmarks around Barry will be lit pink and the Council is shining a light on some of the local intergenerational projects helping to create an Age-friendly Vale.

Crawshay Court Community Garden

Crawshay plastic bottle green house

Volunteers from Vale Plus, Ysgol y Ddraig, South Wales Police and Crawshay court have worked hard to create a truly intergenerational space at Crawshay Court Community Garden, bringing different generations together in mutually beneficial and lasting ways.

Situated at Crawshay Court Sheltered Housing Scheme, the community garden aims to reduce isolation, enhance wellbeing, and produce fruit and vegetable to support tenants and the community through the cost-of-living crisis.

Volunteers at the garden are calling for the community to donate two litre plastic bottles to complete their recycled greenhouse.

If you have bottles to spare, please contact Sian Clemett-Davies to arrange drop off at the Civic Office or drop them off at Llantwit Major Emergency Services Station, Llanmaes Rd CF61 2XD for the attention of PCSO Rhiannon Cummings.

Soup and Song

Soup and song

During last winter the Pencoedtre School cluster invited members of the community to their ‘Soup and Song’ project.

With homemade meals cooked by the pupils on offer, the scheme ensured that local residents had a hot meal at a time where many were left without during the Cost-of-Living crisis.

Followed by a feel-good sing-along, the sessions are a great example of an intergenerational project spreading joy whilst tackling important issues such as loneliness, isolation, and Cost of living.

If you are running an engagement event or activity and / or would like the support of our Age Friendly Vale partners please contact Siân on 01446 700111 or email snclemett-davies@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk
