Black History Month October 2022

October is Black History Month. This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.
Black History Month in October is one of many times throughout the year when we can acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of the black community. It is also a time to take action against racism and discrimination, reclaim Black history, and ensure it is represented and celebrated all year round.
This year’s theme is ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’. This reflects the fact that whilst it is important to learn from history, we need to use this understanding to bring about positive change.
We can all play a part in bringing about positive change. We can be allies. But what is a good ally? What can you do to make a difference?
One way to do this is to join the Diverse staff network for black, Asian and ethnic minority colleagues and allies. You can be part of the positive action that this group is taking – email diverse@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk to find out more.
Another is to get uncomfortable! Read Nova Reid’s thought provoking article ‘No more white saviours, thanks: how to be a true anti-racist ally’ or her book ‘The Good Ally’.
We can educate ourselves about black history and culture so that we are better informed and understand the issues black people face. There are many ways in which you can do this, including:
- Read some books like David Olusoga’s ‘Black and British or Reni Eddo-Lodge’s ‘Why I’m no Longer Talking to White People about Race’.
- Watch out for news of the Diverse network’ book club launch.
There will be more news about what is going on in Black History Month in the coming weeks, so keep posted.
