The World Cup 2022 is underway! As Wales played their first game against USA on Monday, the passion and emotion from the nation’s fans did not go unmissed.
With many of our staff supporting Team Cymru, we want to shed a light on how some of our teams are marking this historic tournament.
Last week, Richard Taylor, Senior Revenues Assistant and dedicated Cymru fan decorated the Finance Offices with Cymru flags.
We asked him what the tournament means to him:
"I have been a member of what is now called ‘The Red Wall’ since 1984 when I went to my first Wales/Cymru game at Ninian Park where Wales defeated Iceland 2-1.
"I have seen Wales play football many times over the years, watching them at Ninian Park, the old National Stadium (formerly Cardiff Arms Park), Millennium/Principality Stadium and in recent years at Cardiff City Stadium.
"I can recall highlights such as Ryan Giggs scoring his first goal for Wales against Belgium in March 1993, Craig Bellamy scoring against Italy in October 2002 in a 2-1 win and Gareth Bale scoring against Belgium in a 1-0 win in June 2015.
"I also recall the low points, such as Scotland equalising late in the game in September 1985 when Wales were two minutes from a play-off match for the 1986 World Cup against Australia, Paul Bodin missing a penalty against Romania in November 1993 and Wales losing 1-0 to Russia in November 2003.
"There are many other games that stand out but my loyalty to Wales can be demonstrated by when I travelled to Cardiff during my final degree examinations at Portsmouth University to watch Wales defeat Germany 1-0 in June 1991. I returned via Reading overnight to sit my final examination the following afternoon.
"In recent years I have attended Wales football, Wales rugby and Cardiff Rugby matches with my eldest daughter Hannah. On one occasion we even attended a Cardiff Rugby fixture and Wales football match the same afternoon running from Cardiff Arms Park to Cardiff City Stadium as there was only 30 minutes between the fixtures but we did not wish to miss either."
