What is Holocaust Memorial Day?
Holocaust Memorial Day is a significant moment in our nation’s history, when we pause to pay tribute to those persecuted and killed during the Holocaust and other genocides throughout the world.
27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. We remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution. It also remembers those killed in genocides that followed, such as in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
HMD is for everyone. Each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. We know they learn more, empathise more and do more.
Each year Holocaust Memorial Day activity in the UK is underpinned by a specific UK wide theme chosen by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. For 2022, the theme is ‘One Day’. This will be the theme of the commemoration at City Hall and of other events across Wales held to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
