Wednesday 7 December: Welsh Language Rights Day

Welsh Language Rights Day aims to raise awareness of the opportunities available to use the Welsh language when dealing with public services.

As an employee, you have the right to use Welsh in the workplace and The Vale of Glamorgan Council strongly encourages staff to speak and learn Welsh – there are so many benefits for you, for the organisation, for our customers, and for our community.

Welsh Language Rights Day is an opportunity for us as a public organisation to promote our Welsh language services to the public. It also marks the date on which the Welsh Language Measure was passed by Parliament.  The measure confirms the official status of the Welsh language and establishes the principle that the Welsh language should not be treated less favourably than the English language in Wales.  This led to the establishment of rights to use Welsh when dealing with public organisations.

If you’re interested in learning Welsh, or improving your existing Welsh language skills, please visit Work Welsh: Yr Hwb, the Staffnet hub for Welsh speakers and learners. There, you can find lots of valuable information for Welsh learners such as useful resources, information on Work Welsh’s upcoming events as well as courses available to learn Welsh, free of charge.
