Ricky Mountjoy celebrates 50 Years of Service

19 April 2022

A council colleague from the Cleansing Team is celebrating 50 years of continuous service.

Ricky Mountjoy began his career at the Vale of Glamorgan Council at 19 years of age, initially keeping the streets of Penarth clean behind the wheel of a road sweeper.

He then switched to barrow cleaning the town centre and quickly became popular with the public and local business owners.

Described as ‘strong as an ox’, Ricky has consistently gone above and beyond in the line of duty.

Local traders approached Penarth Town Council to request that Ricky’s daily hard work be recognised and as a result he was awarded the Outstanding Citizen Award in February 2017.
This honour also saw him given the key to the town of Penarth by Mayor Mike Cuddy at a ceremony attended by Penarth Town Councillors.

Ricky’s hard work isn’t just reserved for his role at the Council. He has spent more than 20 years volunteering for Cancer Research, regularly leaving the house at 3am to collect donations for the charity before starting work.

Outside of work, Ricky loves to play French Bowls and attends his local church in Penarth every Sunday.

In addition to reaching the milestone of 50 years of service, Ricky will also soon be celebrating his 70th birthday.

Not just popular with the locals of Penarth, Ricky’s neighbours insist he would do anything for anyone and often helps with heavy gardening work.

Cleansing Superintendent Tony Spear said: “Ricky is one of the most hard-working and reliable men that I have had the pleasure of knowing. He has an exemplary record and is always happy to get on with his job without any fuss or issues.

“Ricky is enormously popular amongst all his colleagues and is a perfect advertisement for the Council.”
