Vale Learning Centre run Race For Life
Staff at the Vale Learning centre took part in the Cancer Research Race for Life this weekend, raising a total of £1710.
The team completed the race in memory of Emma Evans, the centre’s Essential Skill Coordinator, who passed away in March 2020.
During her time at the centre, Emma helped 100’s of learners to achieve their accreditation goals as a tutor and co-ordinator.
Ten members of staff, plus Charlie the dog, completed the race, which was held in Bute Park. The Race for Life is Cancer Research UK’s biggest series of fundraising events. Taking place across the UK, the events include 5k and 10k routes for participants to walk, jog or run, as well as obstacle events.
The in-person event returned this year, having been postponed due to Covid restrictions.
Phil Southard, who was Emma’s manager, said: “ Emma was a gem, her learners loved her and so did her colleagues. Completing the race and raising the money in her name seemed a fitting way to remember her and help to save others”
Cllr Lis Burnett, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration, said: “This was a touching gesture from Emma’s colleagues who wanted to do something positive to honour her memory.
“It demonstrates the esteem in which Emma was held and the strong bond that exists between members of the Vale Learning Centre team.
“I’d like to congratulate those that took part and express my appreciation for the money they raised. I’m sure that will go a long way to help others who find themselves in challenging circumstances.”
