Be heard. Create Change. Make a difference - join the Diverse Staff Network!

The Diverse Staff Network (formerly the Ethnic Minority Network) is a positive step for our organisation in promoting an inclusive workplace that actively celebrates its diverse community and workforce.

All staff are welcome to join the network and support their mission in helping the Council become an employer of choice for people from diverse communities.

As part of this mission, the group aims to:

  • Have a positive impact for colleagues from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities in the workplace.
  • Raise overall awareness and visibility of its work.
  • Provide a social and supportive environment.

Establishing the network is a stride toward starting the conversation about race equality in the Council in a constructive and open way and demonstrating that uncomfortable conversations can lead to real change.

To celebrate the formal relaunch of the network, we spoke to staff and elected members about the importance of having a diverse network.

Martine Coles Diverse Staff Network

Martine Coles, Chair:

“This network is a kick start in maintaining the momentum of the race equality agenda. As an organisation, it’s important to demonstrate that we are committed to race equality by acting on key issues.

“We’ll be working to advise the Council with relation to the implementation of race equality action plan and to improve employment and service delivery for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities.”

Laura Eddins

Laura Eddins, Wellbeing Champion and Diverse Ally:

“It’s important to recognise that staff wellbeing and inclusivity go hand in hand. Having an equal, diverse, and inclusive workplace can positively impact performance, profitability, recruitment, retention, and talent development.

“We also need to promote a better understanding of race equality issues across the whole Council through training and education.”

Rob Thomas

 Rob Thomas, Managing Director:

“Race equality is everyone’s responsibility, and we all have a role in helping achieve it. All staff are welcome to join and show their support for the network.”
