286,000 items of PPE provided to frontline staff in Covid-19 response

Thursday 16 April

More than a quarter of a million items of personal protective equipment (PPE) have been distributed to staff in the past four weeks.

With many Council staff on the frontline of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic the Emergency Planning team have been working hard to ensure they have all of the protection they need.

PPE stocks at the CivicThe 286,325 items given out to Social Services staff, frontline workers in Environment and Housing, and key workers in many other teams incudes:

  • 18,530 pairs of goggles;
  • 84,500 face masks;
  • 82,925 pairs of gloves; and
  • 96,400 aprons.

On top of this 1039 litres of antibacterial gel has also been issued to protect key workers and front-line teams.

The PPE is being procured from a number of outlets and it is very pleasing to see some local businesses adding their own equipment to the Council’s stocks.

For example, we have received a donation of PPE from a local manufacturing firm, Cabot. The goggles, glasses, masks and overshoes received are being distributed to key frontline staff from the Civic offices today.

Antibac Gel DeliveryThe Council is also helping to support local businesses who have converted their operations to the manufacture of PPE, such as the Hensol Castle Gin Distillery which has temporarily postponed its opening to support the production of antibacterial gel for the NHS and key workers.

Rob Thomas, Managing Director, said: “Protecting our frontline staff is our top priority as they risk their own health and well-being to continue to deliver our most vital services. I cannot thank them enough for their hard word and dedication.

“We are pleased to be able to work with, and support, local businesses during this difficult time, whilst prioritising the protection of our frontline staff.”

If any staff members have contacts in local businesses who could support us at this time, please get in touch with details.
