This week sees the launch of the Council's ‘Do your Part, be RIPA smart’ campaign and the RIPA staffnet+ hub.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of what RIPA is, when Council staff may need to consider RIPA, and what to do if you think RIPA may apply to your work.

As a Council, we serve our communities in many different ways - this includes protecting the public.  The Council carries out a number of regulatory activities - in order for these to operate effectively, and for the public good, sometimes it is necessary to use monitoring/surveillance.

At the same time, the Council also has to be respectful of individual rights and privacy. Key pieces of legislation that helps us achieve this balance is are The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) and The Human Rights Act (HRA).

RIPA governs how we can use investigatory powers to ensure that any actions we take are lawful, necessary, and proportionate

It is important that staff are aware of RIPA and when it could apply to your work.

If you plan to undertake an activity involving surveilence, or are unsure whether RIPA may apply to your work, staff are encouraged to contact the Information Governance Team.
