Merchant Navy Day Service, Tuesday September 3

02 September 2023

The Civic OfficesMerchant Navy Day is marked annually on September 3 on the anniversary of the start of the Second World War to honour and remember the courageous men and women who have served as merchant seafarers.

The Mayor’s Office have organised a service as we raise the Merchant Navy’s official flag, the Red Ensign, at the Civic Offices.

This powerful symbol serves to highlight the indispensable role of merchant seafarers – past, present and future.

Their bravery kept supply lines open during two World Wars, and more recently, they played a crucial role in maintaining the supply chain during the COVID-19 crisis.

As an island nation and the largest port industry in Europe, the UK relies on Merchant Navy Seafarers for handling 95% of our imports and 75% of our exports.

The Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cllr Elliot Penn, and members of the Merchant Navy Association will be leading the ceremony on Tuesday September 3, as the flag is raised at 11am.

Residents and Council staff are invited to attend the ceremony to pay their respects and show their support to the Merchant Navy.
