The Family Information Service has achieved the Families First Quality Award
The Council’s Family Information Service has achieved the Families First Quality Award
The national Award recognises Family Information Services (FIS) that demonstrate excellence in providing information, advice, and assistance to local families.
Following a detailed assessment, the Vale’s team are the third FIS in Wales to achieve the accreditation.
The assessment required the team to evidence 16 standards, including how their service supported families of children with disabilities.
The FIS Index provides support for children and young people with disabilities and additional needs, and was highlighted as a strength in the assessor’s report following interviews with carers and parents of those with complex needs.
One parent said: “I have two children with disabilities. I can access the Family Information Service using different media, which is good for me, as I have autism and disabilities as well.
“The FIS first helped me with information about how to get reasonable adjustments in school for my children, and I have since been able to access grants via the Index.
“They always follow-up after my calls to check if I still need help, which is great when you are neurodiverse.
“They advocate on my behalf and make me feel listened to and empowered.”
The report also applauded the team’s partnership working to deliver an outreach service to parents in the community. The FIS Christmas Family Party, which welcomed over 700 attendees, was identified as an excellent opportunity for parents to connect with partners and learn about the local support available to them.
