School counselling service featured in national campaign for better mental health

An innovative scheme being run in schools in the Vale has been highlighted as an example of best practice by Barnardos in a UK wide campaign to promote better mental health support in schools.

Evidence shows that 1 in 6 children between the ages of 5 - 16 suffer from issues with their mental health. That’s why Barnados are campaigning for more support in schools.

Currently, there can be up to a 10-year delay from the point that a child first experiences mental health difficulties to accessing mental health support services. The campaign aims to shorten this window.

The aim of the campaign is to educate and engage audiences in order to raise awareness of the mental health issues experiences by children and young people, highlight the importance of school-based interventions and demonstrate best practice.

As part of this campaign, Barnados has recognised that Wales has excellent practice and highlight the SBC Vale of Glamorgan’s School Based Counselling service as a great example.
