Highlights of Pride 2022

Colleagues and councillors were amongst the thousands who joined the Pride Cymru march in Cardiff.

Last Saturday, over 20 Vale staff gathered to march. This was following several engagement events to create placards, banners and bunting for the event.

This year’s parade kicked off on Queen Street, as marchers made their way through the city centre, before finishing on North Road near Cardiff Museum. The march was cheered by onlookers, all donned in their best rainbow gear.

Many attended the Pride event itself, which was held on the City Lawns. Performers like Mel C, Ru Paul’s Drag Race finalist, Bimini Bon Boulash and local talent, Polyamorous were amongst those on stage.

We were pleased to see such a diverse range of people - including drag queens, LGBT+ activists, religious groups and others representing the community.

Tom Narbrough, chair of the Council’s LGBT+ network, GLAM, said: “Attending Pride 2022 was truly an extraordinary experience, and one I am very grateful for. It was my first year attending as chairperson of the network and I was pleased to see the biggest attendance we have ever put up for the day."

“Most of all, I was amazed to see so many people in the streets. It was definitely the biggest showing from the public and the cheers, dancing and applause were the highlight of the day. The public were proud of us, and we felt just as proud to stand out and represent the Vale!”

Elyn Hannah, who started her role as Equalities Officer in May, said: “This was my first Pride. I had an absolute blast -  a party and riot of colour, diversity, and expression. I was incredibly proud to take part alongside colleagues from GLAM and members' friends and family, representing the positive work that GLAM and the Vale of Glamorgan Council do. I wanted to take part in Pride to do what I can as an ally to help support, uplift and most importantly on this occasion, to celebrate LGBTQ+ people.”

We’d like to thank all of those who attended and helped organise the event. Preparations are already underway for Barry, Rhoose and Cowbridge Pride, which will all be taking place in Autumn.
