World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
The UNESCO World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is held every year on 21 May, celebrating different world cultures and how dialogue between cultures can contribute to achieving peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
The United Nations General Assembly first declared the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development in 2002 following UNESCO’s adoption of the 2001 Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity. This highlighted the potential of culture as a tool for peaceful coexistence and sustainable development, creating a better world for all. Sustainable development is a critical topic for the UN, and this World Day helps to promote the link between it and cultural diversity.
As well as encouraging dialogue and respect, the World Day for Cultural Diversity of Dialogue and Development also recognises the crucial role played by the cultural and creative sector in generating social cohesion, educational resources and promoting well-being, as well as generating economic growth.
UNESCO encourages everyone to join in celebrating cultural diversity, dialogue and development across the world.
