Standing for election
The next Local Government Elections will be held on Thursday 5 May 2022.
The Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act has introduced a number of changes to how local elections will work this year.
There is a lot of information about the upcoming elections and the election process in general on our website.

One change in particular will affect Vale of Glamorgan Council staff.
Under the Act you are disqualified from being a member of a local authority if you are a paid officer or employee of that local authority. However, you are no longer disqualified from standing as a candidate at an election to a local authority.
This would be the case where your appointment as a member of staff:
- has been made
- could be made
- has been confirmed by the local authority itself
- has been confirmed by any committee or sub-committee of the local authority
- has been confirmed by any joint committee or National Park authority where the local authority is represented by a person holding such an office or employment
If you are a teacher in a school maintained by the local authority you will also be disqualified from being a member of the local authority.
If elected, the disqualification of working for the local authority does not apply at any time before you make a declaration of acceptance of office. Therefore, should you choose to stand for election to the Vale of Glamorgan Council and are successful you must have resigned your post before signing the declaration of acceptance of office.
If you require any further guidance on this issue you should speak to your HR business partner in the first instance.
