Introducing GLAM's new Interim Chairperson
Tom Narbrough is taking over as Interim Chair of GLAM.
24 September, 2021
September is a fantastic month for celebrating our wide range of cultures and identities. With Inclusivity Week coming up and having had Bi Visibility Day earlier this week I would also like to put out a call for the GLAM network and to introduce myself.
I’m Tom (he/him) and I’ve been working in the Vale since January 2019. I was recently fortunate enough to be nominated by the Steering Group to take over as Interim Chairperson for the network and I’m excited for the opportunity to help our colleagues engage with the work that we do.
The role has been expertly filled by Matt Curtis since the network’s inception but as our current chair will be leaving us for pastures new in the near future, we thought it would be best that I take the reins in preparation for the Annual General Meeting next year.
The success of our network is partly based on our diligent colleagues supplying a vibrant calendar of historical and cultural information but we’d also be nothing without the enthusiasm and passion of our members.
I’ve been lead for workplace impact and attended GLAM meetings and socials for a few years now and the warm welcome cannot be underestimated. As we celebrate our diverse identities I would like to extend that welcome to others.
At GLAM, we’re always looking for new members and opportunities to increase visibility, and indeed one of our members had some wonderful words to say in relation to their own experience with GLAM and in celebrating Bisexual Visibility.
"I had never really felt truly included within the mainstream LGBT+ community as, like many bisexuals, I didn’t feel like my identity counted. GLAM has helped me to feel that my identity is valid and that I’m part of a community. I’ve been a member of GLAM since it started as I wanted to meet other LGBT+ colleagues and allies and to discuss the issues impacting LGBT+ groups. I’ve learnt a lot about LGBT+ history, the challenges which have been overcome, and ways to address the issues which persist. I hope that the GLAM network continues to strengthen and reaches more colleagues.”
Keep a look out soon for more communications around Inclusivity but also for opportunities to engage with GLAM and our sister ethnic minority network, Diverse. If you have any questions about who we are or how we operate, feel free to get in touch!
