The needs and experience of bi people don’t get as much consideration as other parts of the LGBT community and they often feel invisible. There are also some negative stereotypes such as bi people being unable to make their minds up, greedy, or not capable of being monogamous.

How bi people are perceived can have a negative impact on their lives and make it difficult for them to be themselves with family and friends.  This results in higher levels of anxiety and lower levels of happiness and life satisfaction than lesbian, gay and straight people.

In turn, this makes it really important that they feel support, reassurance and acceptance.

What can we do?

We can learn about the experience of bi people and the unique challenges they face.

Stonewall has a number of resources where you can learn more, including a Bi Visibility Hub.  Read some of the information on this hub to find out about the challenges that bi people face and ways in which you can help.

Have a look at the information and resources available on the Bi Visibility Day website, including some UK based research and The BiCast Podcast.https://bivisibilityday.com/resources/

Here in the Council, you can join GLAM, our network for LGBT+ colleagues and allies. Look on GLAM’s webpage for other information and resources.

Celebrate diverse identities, raise the voices of bi people, and call for positive change.
