Occasional Use Notice (OUN)

Occasional use notices permit licensed betting operators (with appropriate permission from the Commission) to use tracks for short periods for conducting betting, where the event upon which the betting is to take place is of a temporary, infrequent nature.

Application Forms

Application Process

A notice must be served by a person who is responsible for the administration on the track or by an occupier of the track.

The notice must be served on the licensing authority and copied to the chief officer of police for the area in which the track is located.

The notice must specify the day on which it has effect. Notices may be given in relation to consecutive days, so long as the overall limit of eight days is not exceeded in the calendar year.

There is no specified time period by which the application must be submitted prior to the event.

Background and Eligibility Criteria

Under Section 39 of the Gambling Act 2005 Occasional Use Notices permit betting on a track on 8 days or less in a calendar year.

Betting may be permitted by way of an Occasional Use Notice (OUN) without the need for a full betting premises licence. The use of such Notices will be for where the event upon which the betting is to take place is of a temporary, infrequent nature.

A notice must be served by a person who is responsible for the administration of events on the track or by an occupier of the track.

Occasional Use Notices can only be used for up to a maximum of eight days in any calendar year (starting 1st January).

There is no specified time period by which the application must be submitted prior to the event.
